Vehicle Access Control: ANPR Cameras, Boom Barriers & Smart Systems for Enterprise Premises
A pharmaceutical company's Gazipur facility had a problem that a perimeter fence and guard hut could not solve: 85% of vehicle access events involved known, regular delivery vehicles — the same trucks, the same drivers, arriving multiple times per week. Guards spent the majority of their time doing a task that computers should handle: checking licence plates against a whitelist and deciding whether to open the barrier. When a genuine security event occurred (an unregistered vehicle behaving suspiciously at the gate), the guard on duty was occupied processing a routine delivery.
Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) solves this allocation problem. Routine authorised vehicles are processed instantly without human intervention. The gate system automatically presents guards with actionable information about exceptions — unregistered vehicles, blacklisted plates, visitor registrations — allowing guards to focus their attention where it matters.
This guide explains how ANPR works, the types of barriers available in Bangladesh, and how to design a complete smart vehicle access system for your enterprise premises.
How ANPR/LPR Works
ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition), also called LPR (Licence Plate Recognition), is an AI-powered video analytics function that reads vehicle licence plates from camera footage in real time.
The ANPR Process
Step 1 — Plate detection: An object detection neural network identifies the licence plate region within the camera frame. Modern detection handles partial angles, varying plate positions, and plates at different scales.
Step 2 — Character segmentation: The plate region is extracted and individual characters are segmented.
Step 3 — Character recognition (OCR): An optical character recognition neural network reads each character. For Bangladesh registration plates (which follow a standardised format), recognition rates exceed 98% in good conditions.
Step 4 — Database matching: The recognised plate is matched against configured lists:
- Whitelist: Authorised vehicles that receive automatic access
- Blacklist: Vehicles flagged for security alerts on arrival
- Visitor list: Pre-registered temporary visitors with time-limited access
Step 5 — Action trigger: Based on the match result, the system triggers the appropriate response: open barrier (whitelist match), alert guard (blacklist), log and prompt guard verification (visitor), or alert guard for unknown plates.
ANPR Accuracy in Real-World Conditions
Good Conditions: 98%+ Accuracy
ANPR achieves very high accuracy when:
- Camera is positioned to capture the plate at an angle of less than 30 degrees
- Lighting provides clear illumination of the plate (dedicated IR illuminator or white light)
- Vehicle is moving slowly (under 30 km/h for stationary ANPR; up to 120+ km/h for enforcement-grade systems)
- Plate is clean and undamaged
Challenging Conditions
Night and low light: Standard cameras have limited plate capture at night. Dedicated ANPR cameras include high-power integrated IR illuminators that flood the plate zone with infrared light, maintaining 90–95% accuracy in complete darkness.
Heavy rain: Monsoon rainfall reduces contrast and can cause water streaks on the plate. IR illumination reduces this impact; accuracy drops to 85–92% in heavy rain. Dedicated ANPR camera housing designs minimise rain impact on the lens.
Dirty or damaged plates: Mud-covered plates, physically damaged characters, or plates with non-standard fonts (customised plates) reduce accuracy. A quality control alert for repeated unread plates allows guards to intervene.
Commercial plates and new vehicle plates: Newly registered vehicles may have temporary paper plates with inconsistent fonts. Commercial vehicles with large fleet numbers may have non-standard plate formats. Configure the system to flag unread plates for guard verification rather than automatic denial.
ANPR Camera Specifications
ANPR is not a function of standard surveillance cameras. Dedicated ANPR cameras have specific requirements:
Resolution: Minimum 2MP; 4MP or higher recommended for wider lanes or oblique angles.
Shutter speed: High shutter speed (1/2000 second or faster) freezes plate motion, eliminating motion blur.
Dynamic IR illumination: Dedicated high-power IR LEDs optimised for the ANPR working distance (typically 3–8 metres for standard vehicle gates).
Lens focal length: ANPR cameras use medium telephoto lenses (12–25mm) to fill the frame with the vehicle plate at the working distance.
Trigger input: Hardware trigger input from loop detector or radar sensor to capture precisely when the vehicle is in the optimal reading position.

Boom Barrier Types and Specifications
The boom barrier is the physical vehicle access control element. The barrier arm blocks or allows vehicle entry based on the ANPR decision or guard input.
Standard Boom Barrier (3–5 Second Opening Time)
The most common type in Bangladesh's commercial market. Electric motor drives a counterweighted boom arm from horizontal (closed) to vertical (open) in 3–5 seconds.
Specifications:
- Boom arm length: 3–6 metres
- Opening time: 3–5 seconds
- Duty cycle: 500–1,000 operations/day (heavy commercial models)
- Typical price: BDT 35,000–80,000 per unit
- Brands: FAAC (Italy), BFT (Italy), NICE (Italy), locally distributed alternatives
Application: Standard entry/exit gates at offices, factories, and car parks with moderate traffic (up to 400 operations/day). Adequate for sites where queue buildup at the barrier is acceptable.
High-Speed Boom Barrier (0.5–1.5 Second Opening Time)
Designed for high-traffic applications where the standard 3–5 second open time creates vehicle queues. High-speed barriers use reinforced motors and counterbalancing systems to achieve rapid arm movement.
Specifications:
- Opening time: 0.5–1.5 seconds
- Duty cycle: 5,000–10,000 operations/day
- Boom arm length: 3–6 metres
- Crash resistance: Some models rated to withstand a vehicle impact that breaks the arm without damaging the mechanism
- Typical price: BDT 120,000–250,000 per unit
Application: Corporate headquarters with 200+ vehicles per hour at peak, hospital emergency vehicle access, high-frequency factory truck gates.
Crash-Rated (Anti-Ram) Vehicle Barriers
For facilities requiring protection against deliberate vehicle ramming — embassies, government facilities, data centres, chemical plants, bank headquarters — crash-rated barriers (bollards, rising wedge barriers, heavy drop-arm barriers) are specified. These meet IWA 14-1 or ASTM F2656 vehicle impact standards.
This is a specialist security engineering product outside the scope of standard boom barriers. Consult SSAL's specialist team for anti-ram vehicle protection requirements.
Vehicle Detection: How Does the System Know a Vehicle Is Present?
ANPR cameras are triggered by a vehicle detection input. Three technologies detect vehicle presence:
Inductive loop detectors: Wire loops embedded in the road surface detect the metal mass of a vehicle above them. Reliable, unaffected by weather or lighting. Installation requires cutting the road surface for loop burial — suitable for permanent installations.
Radar detectors: Radar sensors mounted above the lane detect vehicle presence without road cutting. Suitable for temporary installations or surfaces where road cutting is not permitted.
Video-based detection: The ANPR camera itself detects vehicle presence using image analysis. The least reliable method in complex lighting conditions but eliminates additional hardware.
For permanent installations in Bangladesh, inductive loop detectors are the most reliable choice. Specify two loop zones per lane (approach zone + stop zone) for precise position-triggered plate capture.
Complete Vehicle Access System Design
Single-Lane Entry/Exit Configuration (Standard Factory/Office Gate)
Components per lane:
- 1 × dedicated ANPR camera (lane side, 4MP, integrated IR)
- 1 × high-power supplemental IR illuminator (for night capture, opposing side)
- 1 × boom barrier (standard speed for low-traffic; high-speed for 100+ vehicles/hour)
- 1 × inductive loop detector (approach zone)
- 1 × inductive loop detector (stop zone, controls barrier closing to prevent arm lowering on vehicle)
- 1 × barrier controller (integrated with ANPR decision logic)
- 1 × guard intercom unit (for visitor verification at the barrier)
- 1 × guard display monitor (showing plate read, whitelist match result, vehicle photo)
Approximate system cost (Bangladesh market, 2026): BDT 2.5–5 lakh per lane (ANPR camera, barrier, loops, controller — excluding cabling, installation, and ANPR software licence)
Multi-Lane Configuration for Large Sites
For sites with 3+ lanes (major factory gates, hospital vehicle entrances, large corporate campuses), a central ANPR management server provides:
- Central whitelist/blacklist database shared across all lanes
- Unified guard console showing all lanes simultaneously
- Centralised visitor pre-registration accessible from all lanes
- Reporting and statistics (traffic counts per lane, peak periods, blacklist events)
Hikvision HikCentral, Dahua DSS, and Genetec Security Center all provide multi-lane vehicle access management functions.
Visitor Vehicle Management: Pre-Registration Workflow
The visitor vehicle process is where ANPR delivers significant operational value beyond pure security:
Step 1 — Host pre-registers visitor vehicle: The internal host employee enters the expected visitor's vehicle registration plate into the visitor management portal (web or mobile app), along with the visit date/time and permitted zones.
Step 2 — Vehicle arrives at gate: ANPR reads the plate. System matches it against the pre-registered visitor list. Match found: barrier opens automatically, guard display shows visitor name and host name.
Step 3 — Guard interface (optional): Guard can see that this is a pre-registered visitor, verify with a quick photo comparison if needed, and the barrier has already opened — zero delay.
Step 4 — Visitor vehicle exit: On exit, the plate is read again. The visit record is closed with entry and exit timestamps. If the visitor has not exited by the pre-registered end time, the system alerts the guard.
Step 5 — Non-pre-registered visitors: Plate not found in any list. Guard is prompted on their display. Guard uses the intercom to verify the visitor's identity, contacts the host employee, and manually opens the barrier if authorised. The unregistered visit is logged.
This workflow eliminates the common failure mode where visitors are waved through a barrier without proper checking during busy periods.
Pro Tip: For factories with regular delivery vehicles, create a "trusted supplier" category in the vehicle whitelist. Trusted supplier vehicles receive automatic access but mandatory departure recording through the exit lane ANPR. Any trusted supplier vehicle that enters but does not exit within a configurable time window (e.g., 4 hours for a typical delivery) generates an alert for guard investigation. This simple rule detects abandoned vehicles — a tactic sometimes used as a precursor to insider theft.

Key Takeaways
- ANPR achieves 98%+ accuracy in good conditions; dedicated ANPR cameras with integrated IR maintain 90–95% accuracy at night and in rain
- Standard boom barriers suit moderate-traffic applications; high-speed barriers (0.5–1.5 second open time) are required for high-frequency gates
- Inductive loop detectors provide the most reliable vehicle presence detection for permanent gate installations
- A complete system requires ANPR camera + IR illuminator + barrier + two loop detectors + controller + guard display per lane
- Visitor pre-registration dramatically improves gate efficiency and security by matching arriving vehicles against an expected list
- Multi-site facilities should specify a central ANPR management server for unified whitelist/blacklist management across all gates
