A pharmaceutical company in Narsingdi invested in premium optical turnstiles for their main lobby entrance — an excellent choice for their corporate headquarters. Their factory production area used the same optical turnstiles. Within six months, a maintenance incident revealed that the optical turnstiles had been routinely tailgated by workers in pairs during busy shift changes — the IR beam anti-tailgating sensors could not distinguish between two people walking in very close succession in a production environment with irregular movement patterns.
The factory needed full-height turnstiles. The lobby needed optical turnstiles. Form factor and function must be matched to the specific use case.
This guide explains the four main turnstile types, their performance characteristics, anti-tailgating effectiveness, throughput rates, and the specific Bangladesh facility types they suit best.
What Turnstiles Do (and Do Not Do)
A turnstile is a physical access barrier that mechanically or electronically enforces one-person-at-a-time passage, integrated with an access control credential reader to verify each person before allowing passage.
Turnstiles address the fundamental limitation of standalone door access control: a person can hold a door open for another person who has not authenticated (tailgating). Turnstiles mechanically prevent this — or make it significantly more difficult.
What turnstiles do not do:
- Verify identity independently (they require a reader credential)
- Prevent all tailgating in all configurations (design-dependent)
- Work without access control integration (they are barriers, not standalone security systems)
Turnstile Type 1: Tripod Turnstile
Design and Operation
The tripod turnstile uses three horizontal rotating arms arranged 120 degrees apart in a triangular configuration. One arm is always blocking passage. When an authorised credential is presented, the mechanism releases and allows one arm rotation — permitting one person to pass through.
The arms rotate in one direction only under normal operation (bi-directional models allow arm reversal for two-way use). Emergency release (all arms fold down flat) allows free passage during fire evacuation.
Specifications
| Parameter | Typical Range |
|---|---|
| Throughput | 20–25 persons/minute |
| Lane width | 550–600mm (standard person width) |
| Power | 12V DC, 5–10W |
| Typical price (Bangladesh market) | BDT 80,000–150,000 per lane |
| Typical installation width | 900–1,100mm per lane |
Anti-Tailgating Performance
Tripod turnstiles provide moderate anti-tailgating protection. The rotating arms physically block simultaneous passage of two people — a second person must wait for the arm to reset before attempting to pass.
Limitation: Tripod arms can be jumped or ducked under by a determined person, particularly if they wait until the arm has rotated and try to slip through quickly. This is less common in monitored environments (reception with guard) but a real risk in unmonitored locations.
Best Applications in Bangladesh
- Factory worker entry gates: The most common Bangladesh application. Economical, robust, handles large shift-change throughput with multiple parallel lanes.
- Gym and leisure facility entry: Controls member access without premium investment.
- Internal zone access points: Between departments or production zones where moderate security is sufficient.
- Parking and public transport entry: High-volume but lower-security applications.
Bangladesh Factory Context: Most RMG factories in Bangladesh's Ashulia, Gazipur, and Narsingdi industrial areas use 3–8 tripod turnstile lanes at their main employee gates. A typical 4-lane tripod installation handles 80–100 workers per minute during shift changes — adequate for most single-gate factory configurations.
Turnstile Type 2: Optical Lane Turnstile (Flap Barrier)
Design and Operation
Optical lane turnstiles use two pedestals facing each other across a lane, with retractable glass or acrylic flap panels that open outward when an authorised credential is presented and return to the blocking position after each passage. Multi-beam infrared sensors continuously monitor the lane for tailgating.
The glass/acrylic panels are typically 600–900mm high — they block a person's path but could theoretically be stepped over. Their primary anti-tailgating mechanism is the sensor array, which detects if two bodies are in the lane simultaneously.
Specifications
| Parameter | Typical Range |
|---|---|
| Throughput | 30–40 persons/minute |
| Lane width | 600–900mm (standard); up to 1,500mm (ADA/wheelchair lane) |
| Flap height | 600–900mm (waist-height) |
| Typical price (Bangladesh market) | BDT 300,000–600,000 per lane |
| Typical installation width | 1,200–1,600mm per lane |
Anti-Tailgating Performance
Optical turnstiles use multiple IR beam pairs to detect occupancy throughout the lane length. If the sensor detects two bodies in the lane simultaneously (tailgating), an alarm is triggered and the flap panels close to block the second person.
Modern optical turnstiles combine IR beams with AI camera-based person detection, significantly improving tailgating detection accuracy in challenging conditions.
Limitation: Optical turnstiles cannot physically stop a determined jumper or someone who rapidly follows another person through before the panels close. They are a deterrent backed by alarm notifications, not an absolute physical barrier. In a supervised environment (lobby with reception staff), this is entirely adequate. In an unmonitored environment, a more robust barrier may be appropriate.
ADA / Accessibility Lane
Optical lane turnstile configurations include a wider ADA (wheelchair-accessible) lane — typically one lane per installation at 1,200–1,500mm width with full-width flap panels. This is required for accessibility compliance in public-facing facilities.
Best Applications in Bangladesh
- Corporate lobby and headquarters: The premium appearance of glass-panel optical turnstiles suits modern corporate lobbies in Dhaka's Gulshan, Banani, and Motijheel commercial districts.
- Hotel lobby: Controls guest access to room floors without the industrial appearance of tripod turnstiles.
- Bank branch lobby: Controls access between public banking area and staff-only zone.
- Government ministry entrances: Controls public access with professional appearance.
Pro Tip: For corporate lobbies where aesthetics are a priority, specify optical turnstiles with brushed stainless steel or powder-coated pedestal finishes. The pedestal design (height, width, colour) should complement the lobby interior design. Work with your interior designer and the turnstile supplier to coordinate finishes before ordering.
Turnstile Type 3: Full-Height Turnstile
Design and Operation
Full-height turnstiles (also called "rotary turnstiles" or "high-security turnstiles") are floor-to-ceiling rotating barriers — typically 2.0–2.2 metres high — with four arms spaced 90 degrees apart. Each quarter-turn permits one person through; the full floor-to-ceiling barrier physically prevents climbing over or ducking under.
Full-height turnstiles are the only standard turnstile type that cannot be tailgated or defeated by jumping over. The complete physical enclosure makes unauthorised passage essentially impossible without heavy force.
Specifications
| Parameter | Typical Range |
|---|---|
| Throughput | 15–20 persons/minute |
| Lane width | 550–600mm |
| Height | 2,000–2,200mm |
| Typical price (Bangladesh market) | BDT 250,000–500,000 per lane |
| Installation weight | 300–500 kg per unit |
Anti-Tailgating Performance
Full-height turnstiles provide the maximum physical anti-tailgating protection of any standard turnstile type. The floor-to-ceiling design eliminates all jumping, ducking, or squeezing through options. Each quarter-turn physically accommodates one standard adult person — simultaneous passage of two people is mechanically prevented.
Limitation: Throughput is lower than optical or tripod turnstiles (15–20 persons/minute) due to the mechanical rotation requirement. Not suitable for high-throughput applications (factory shift changes at peak hours with 500+ workers per 30 minutes) without many parallel lanes. Not ADA-compliant as a primary access solution — always pair with an adjacent ADA-accessible door or gate for wheelchair users.
Best Applications in Bangladesh
- EPZ and BEPZA zone factory perimeters: Security zones where unauthorised entry has serious compliance consequences.
- Stadium and sports venue entry: High-consequence security requiring definitive entry control.
- Prison and correctional facility: Maximum physical barrier requirement.
- Critical infrastructure access (power plant, chemical plant, port facility): Security perimeter where physical prevention of tailgating is essential.
- Industrial secure zones: Areas handling high-value materials where internal theft is a specific concern.
Turnstile Type 4: Speed Gate (Premium Optical Lane)
Design and Operation
Speed gates are the premium evolution of optical lane turnstiles. They use faster-closing panel mechanisms (response time under 0.5 seconds vs. 1–2 seconds for standard optical turnstiles) and more sophisticated sensor arrays for anti-tailgating detection.
Speed gates offer the highest throughput of any turnstile type (60+ persons/minute in ideal conditions), the most elegant appearance, and the most sophisticated detection algorithms. They are specified for the most prestigious corporate, financial, and hospitality applications.
Specifications
| Parameter | Typical Range |
|---|---|
| Throughput | 40–60+ persons/minute |
| Lane width | 600–1,000mm |
| Flap type | Full-height (800–1,100mm) glass panels |
| Typical price (Bangladesh market) | BDT 500,000–1,200,000 per lane |
| Typical installation width | 1,400–1,800mm per lane |
